Red Wine with a Twist
Ever wanted to wiz up a quick drink and sit out in the garden with a good book? Then this is the perfect drink for you.
Pour yourself a glass of red, but this time a little less than the usual amount. Add in a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice and a tablespoon of freshly squeezed orange juice. To garnish, just sprinkle some powdered sugar on top.
Whiskey Sour Slush
Now, we kept the best till last. This drink is not for the fainthearted. It not only takes a little more work than just mixing the ingredients in a shaker, this requires a hob to make red wine syrup. Yes, you read that right, red wine syrup!
For this adventurous drink, you’ll also need an ice cream maker. The ingredients to make this mouth-watering drink, includes 1 ¼ cups lemon juice from 8-10 lemons, 1 ½ cups of water, 1 cup of Golden syrup, 7tbs whiskey, 1tbs grated lemon zest, a pinch of salt, 1 ½ cup red wine and ¾ cup sugar.
Stage 1: Whisk the lemon juice, water, Golden syrup, whiskey and lemon zest in a large bowl until they are very well combined. Place in the freezer and chill for about 1 ½ hours.
Stage 2: Transfer the above into ice cream maker and churn until it looks like a soft sorbet without visible liquid pooling on the top. It should leave a clear indentation when you press a spoon against the slush. Transfer the slush to an airtight container and chill in the freezer until ready to serve.
Stage 3: Heat the red wine and sugar in a saucepan on a high setting. Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved and the liquid volume is reduced by half. If you have a thermometer, the temperature should read 105 Celsius. Transfer to a small container and chill in fridge until ready to serve.
Final stage: Spoon 1 or 2 tbs of red wine syrup in the bottom of each cup. Fill the cup with slush and top with a shot of whiskey. Serve with a spoon or a thick straw.
Enjoy the summer!
