Because we are a supplier of luxury vintages for reasonable prices, Ideal Wine Company knows that there’s a huge market for the world’s favourite tipple here in the UK.

Yet France is the wine making capital of the world. The French are known for having a glass of wine with every meal. You’d think that they would drink more wine than anyone else in the world. However apparently that doesn’t appear to be the case.

The World’s Second Largest Still Wine Market

According to the Financial Times, as they develop a taste for more expensive bottles, British wine lovers are set outspend their counterparts across the Channel when it comes to wine.

Recent research from wine exhibition and forum Vinexpo shows that the value of the UK’s wine market increased by 15% to $16.1 billion between 2008 and 2014. The onset of the economic recovery will spur further growth, with Vinexpo figures showing that it will climb to $17.1 billion by 2018. This would make the UK the world’s second largest still wine market; ahead of France and just behind the US.

The Growing Popularity of “Premium” Vintages

The publication went on to reveal that the lion’s share of this growth has come from the growing popularity of the “premium” vintage. Bottles with a price tag of between £7 and £14.

A drinks analyst by the name of Chris Wisson from market research company Mintel explained the trend. Wisson argued that “this is part of a wider trend of consumers drinking less, but when they do drink, some are looking for something a bit more special.”
